Continuous infusion (CI), or protracted venous
infusion (PVI), is used as an alternative to bolus infusion in a variety of
circumstances.
Numerous
studies have been conducted for specific conditions, therapies and agents. In
general, these studies conclude that CI offers patients benefits which may
include improved clinical outcomes, reduced toxicity and side effects, greater
freedom and mobility, and improvements in average daily living (ADL)
function. Practices generally observe
benefits which include improved clinical outcomes, reduced toxicity and side
effects resulting in improved adherence to therapy, and reimbursement for
appropriate clinical services related to the administration of continuous
infusion.
